Unlike powerful (relatively) shorter books like Toni Morrison's Beloved, Tinkers grated on my nerves from the very beginning. Professional reviews touted the detail of such tasks as watch repair which I found to be eloquent (for a watch repair manual) but incredibly boring in a novel.

Tinkers, having won the Pulitzer Prize this year for fiction, is beautifully written, and is certainly proof that some of the best writing can be found in the smaller presses. Spare, yet expertly worded prose, and a story which is both personal and engaging. Tinkers deserved the acclaim it received, it would do all people well to read this book/5(32). Tinkers often reads more like a poem than a novel, holding extended passages describing nature or recollection in huge, meandering sentences that carry meaning and feeling like a swollen river delivers silt. It is not an easy read.

Harding contemplates the tenuous borders of time, and the uncertain edges of reality/5. “Tinkers is a poignant exploration of where we may journey when the clock has barely a tick or two left and we really can’t go anywhere at all.” —CHRIS BOHJALIAN, Boston Globe “The life and death questions Paul Harding raises in Tinkers, as well as the richness of his writing, keep a reader coming back to it Like Faulkner, he never shies away from describing what seems /5().

Tinkers () is the first novel by American author, Paul Harding. The novel tells the stories of George Washington Crosby, an elderly clock repairman, and of his father, Howard. On his deathbed, George remembers his father, who was a tinker selling household goods from a donkey-drawn cart and who struggled with : Paul Harding.

Tinker is a girl genius raised in Wen (short for Wendy) Spencer explains elves and other mythical creatures in a very original manner: they are from a different dimension. In "Tinker", an interdimensional gate transports the whole city of Pittsburg to Earth once a month for supplies (a day called Shutdown), while the rest of the time it is in Elfland/5.

Every now and then a good book completely passes us by: we don’t get a copy, for whatever reason, and we don’t request one because the book’s not on our radar. That’s what happened with Paul Harding’s first novel, “Tinkers,” which has gone and won the Pulitzer Prize.

Scheduling meetings is a chore because you have to look at your calendar, select some times that are open, then create a meeting invite for one, or more meeting times to all of the attendees, then you have to track what time everyone wants to meet, rearrange schedules, re-send out meeting invites, remember to delete tentative meeting invites, and then hope that you got all of.

Marilynne Robinson's Gilead, Cormac McCarthy's The Road, Edward Jones' The Known World, Junot Diaz's Oscar Wao and, now, Paul Harding's Tinkers represent what great literature is all about. I was only 20 pages into this book when I felt the overwhelming presence of Marilynne Robinson.5/5(5).
